Announcing a pilot program called “Design our Door!”, sparking the creativity of Oakland’s young artists and featuring the work of one West Oakland teen artist in the 94607 zip code, with an opportunity to showcase their artwork publicly at a fine art gallery, beginning Fall 2018.
“Design Our Door!” will have its inaugural launch with generous funding from the Clorox Foundation and showcase the artwork of West Oakland teenagers on the door of ASG. Teenagers in Oakland are an underserved/underrepresented group within the local arts landscape, and with this program, we aim to recognize local talent and foster local teens’ sense of being valued, their ambition, and honor the creativity they bring to the community.
ASG will focus outreach for high schools and 8th grade, as well as community organizations and school groups in the West Oakland neighborhood. Outbound communications call for rolling submissions to “Design our Door!”, providing 1,500 teenagers in the 94607 zip code the opportunity to have their work reproduced as a vinyl, weather-proof mural and installed on the exterior door of ASG. The work will be located at the main entry to the gallery – a symbolic point of entry to the community and our visitors. We are accepting images of all mediums: drawing, photograph, painting, collage, sculpture, etc.
Submissions will be collected with an online form starting Fall 2018 – digitally captured and submitted electronically, or shown in person for documentation during open gallery hours.
The selected work will be printed for ASG’s “Design our Door!” installation and the artist will additionally receive a framed print they can take home. A $50 gift certificate to Flax Art Store for the artist will be presented to the selected artist along with two runner-up prizes of $25 gift certificates to Flax as well. The selected work will also be featured on a splash page of the ASG website and featured in social media. We estimate that over 400 visitors to the gallery will experience the printed artwork in the estimated two months that the work is displayed.
