On Accessible Virtual Reality: Changing the Perception of Other Body through Embodiment

Submissions are DUE JULY 10, 2020 / 11:59 PM PST **DEADLINE EXTENDED through JULY 25

Aggregate Space Gallery (ASG) is pleased to announce its artist call for the pilot solo exhibition on Virtual Reality (VR) open to California-based practitioners, who are primarily working with media arts and have a demonstrated track record of VR content creation. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a two-month research session dedicated to the concept of embodiment in Virtual Reality.

The concept of embodiment in Virtual Reality systems has demonstrated that the participants can experience reduced racial bias towards other bodies and felt empathy for the compromised. The methods that can afford immersive experiences such as mobile and desktop VR, or simply Google Cardboard, will be the next platform for the artists. How can we start a creative and accessible dialog between artists and communities that can collaborate with technology to enable empathy towards the human experience of others? With this prompt in mind, we invite our applicants to read the Medium article, “Mel Slater: becoming a better person through VR embodiment,” written by Marco Gill.

Reviews will be based on the applicant’s responses to the questionnaire and VR portfolio. Emerging artists are especially encouraged to apply. Feel free to research our previous projects and prepare your application by keeping our mission in focus. You can prepare your portfolio submission in a web-based game engine that can be accessible through Mobile VR, or software engines such as Unity3D to work on Head-Worn Display (HWD) with position tracking.

The finalist artists will be invited to a short interview where they will be given mentorship in the field, and their portfolio will be considered for the upcoming programming. Once evaluated, instructions will be sent by July 20, 2020, about the next steps.

If you only would like to participate in the research group but not to the artist call, please enter your email address to the Google Forms: https://forms.gle/3XKQfjdgp3KNiiao6

ASG will be looking forward to evaluating your application!
