VOLUNTEER and INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Why Now?

ASG is in a moment of momentous growth and exciting change. Over the past few years, we’ve grown from an artist-run space into a nationally-funded nonprofit, but are facing a challenging moment in our history and we need your help. In August, we were priced out our space at 801 W Grand Ave in Oakland. We’d built a community there over 8 years, made countless memories and brought together installations, poetry readings, film screenings, performances, and workshops. And then we had to tear it all down.

We kept going knowing we had a strong community behind us. We lined up partnerships and ended 2019 strong with months of satellite programming at Classic Cars West, Warehouse 416, and SFAI. Despite all these challenges, our community’s confidence and encouragement helped us stay open and we kept searching and taking risks.

After all the uncertainty, we are proud to share that we will be staying in Oakland and moving to a new home in 2020! It’s a move that gives us great hope. As we strive for a more stable 2020 and beyond, we are studying numerous possible earned income models (more workshops, affordable rental space for events and performances) while we adapt to our new home. But now we need your generosity more than ever. We would love you to be a part of this very exciting future in our new West Oakland home!

To accomplish our goal of continuing our critical programming for emerging artists and nationally recognized programming while we seek a new home for ASG, we need your help during this pivotal moment. With the right expertise and support, ASG can have a bright future in the Bay Area as a vehicle for groundbreaking multimedia, installation, and experimental video works that push forward challenging conversations and create new worlds of thought. You will be a critical part of our growth and forward momentum.

What’s in it for you:

Although these are unpaid positions, it is an opportunity for a self-motivated individual to take the reins on an interesting project, think creatively to help shape the future of ASG, and meet cool people and have fun doing it. You will receive a well-rounded experience working in a nationally recognized institution as well as advance and sharpen your communication skills, exposure to and literacy with digital and technological tools used in nonprofits. These roles are ideal for someone looking to gain experience in the arts. At the end of a successful internship or volunteer project, our staff will be happy to provide a written reference supporting your future.
