Survey: Artist-run Spaces of Oakland

A Precursor to the Oakland Congress of Experience-Based Art

17 February – 25 March 2017

An artist-run space is a gallery space run by artists, traditionally created to circumvent the structures of private commercial galleries. In Oakland, these spaces have shaped the art scene, generating opportunities for artists that, either through circumstance or choice, have been unable to participate in the competitive, commodity-driven art world.

With Survey we will shine a light on a small cross section of the organizers and curators of artist-run spaces past and present as they speak about what inspired them to open/organize their spaces. We will reflect on the mission of these spaces while sharing in the passions and resources, and the successes and failures, all while creating a monument to their influence and the role that they have played and continue to play in our community.
